An ascent via normal route,

fairly easy rock climbing on both
sides of Shiltfurge; spectacular views.
November, 1998 North Sandia Peak 3184m Sandia Mountains,
New Mexico, U.S.A.
Via Knife's Edge,
my first time on Kinfe's Edge,
one of my favorite hikes in Sandias
the summit itself is boring.
November, 1998 Sandia Crest 3255m Sandia Mountains,

Via Domingo Baca Canyon,
new first time route South of
Echo Canyon; now my favorite
Domingo Baca route to the crest.
September 14, 1997 Wiwannihorn 3001m Walliser Alps,

some rock climbing in a couloir
leading to the ridge, breathtaking
views; see the summit at my slide show.
July 30, 1995 Rysy 2499m Polish High Tatra,
Poland
Via Morskie Oko,
my first and only ascent of the Poland's

spectacular views of

August 6, 1994 Wheeler Peak 4009m Rocky Mountains,

My second 4000-er yet what
a difference; very easy walk to
this highest peak in New Mexico.
June 19, 1994 Eggishorn
2927m Walliser Alps,
Switzerland
An easy hike but the speedy descent
in the middle of thunderstorm was
electrifying.
June 18, 1994 Breithorn

Switzerland
My fist 4000-er and first glacier
walk; an easy walk from Klein
Matterhorn upper cable car terminal; see the summit photo at my slide show.

Getting ready for Breithorn and
the first time in crampons.
June 12, 1994 Gärschthorn

Switzerland
My first mountain in the Alps - I
will never forget this one,
especially the descent to and from Shiltfurge.

and other memorable hikes

Date Summit's Name Elevation Mountain Range Route and Comments
August 1, 1999 Rimpfischhorn
4198m Walliser Alps,
Switzerland
A failed attempt at a
more challenging 4000-er - we were
forced to turn around just above the
Rimpfischsattel (4009m); for the
story and the route see the slide show.
Fall 1996 Sandia Crest
3255m Sandia Mountains,
New Mexico, U.S.A.
My first hike into the TWA Canyon -
I tried to repeat the hike I did
a year earlier and got lost;
remains of the TWA plane from
a fatal crash almost half a century ago
make an amazing impression (at least
the first time around).
Fall 1996 South Sandia Peak
3005m Sandia Mountains,
New Mexico, U.S.A.
Finally on the South Peak;
after 7 years in Albuquerque.
May, 1995 Sandia Crest
3255m Sandia Mountains,
New Mexico, U.S.A.
My first hike in the Domingo Baca Canyon
- we went up into the Echo Canyon
all the way to the Crest Trail -
nice but too much bushwhacking.
September, 1994 Sandia Crest
3255m Sandia Mountains,
New Mexico, U.S.A.
My first hike on the Chimney Rock
Trail.
September, 1994 Grand Canyon
?? Grand Canyon National Park,
Arizona, U.S.A.
My first hike in the Canyon.
See a photo.
June 23, 1994 Fletschhorn
3993m Walliser Alps,
Switzerland
A failed attempt - we had to
turn around after reaching one of
the fake summits above 3800m;
on the way down we were almost swept
from a steep slope by a small avalanche.
